What is the series of piano books every music teacher has?
When I took piano, every music guide I can remember had a series of piano books, with the major works of every major composer. I know there were at least twenty books in the series, and they weren't divided by predicament level (they were chronological, I think). I remember they were hardcover cream-colored, with dark green bindings. Would disposition to know what "series" I'm thinking of and where I can get them. Thanks!

Maybe this is one of those only-in-New York stories.</p><p>In 1957, documentary photographer W. Eugene Smith moved into a grey-brown loft apartment. He outfitted it as a studio for his own art and, with a piano and drum set, for jazz musicians to drop in and play. And drop in they did. Thelonious Monastic, Miles Davis, Bill Evans, Zoot Sims, Stan Getz, Charles Mingus and even onetime Kansas Conurbation player Buck Clayton passed through and made music.</p><p> Smith recorded casual sessions, rehearsals and lots of other emanations from the cultural view of the day, including numerous radio and TV shows (Dorothy Parker talking about Kerouac and the Beats, Sidney Poitier reading poems by James Weldon Johnson and Langston Hughes).</p><p>The Jazz Loft was a cauldron — every see needs one or more — and the breadth of its left-bank treasures can be found in a large-format book, <strong>“The Jazz Loft Commitment: Photographs and Tapes of W. Eugene Smith from 821 Sixth Avenue, 1957-1965.”</strong> It was compiled by historian Sam Stephenson — a discharge spanning 13 years — and published this month by Alfred A. Knopf and the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University ($40). </p><p>Smith’s nefarious-and-white photos of musicians, and street scenes shot from his fourth-floor window, are interspersed with Stephenson’s commentary and excerpted transcripts from Smith’s now digitized recordings. The photos alone (snow falling on passersby, a man emerging from a cab) are significance the price of admission.</p><p>But Smith’s obsession with the music and with documenting the art of his time makes this a double-decker action towards.
