But if Scrooge has a housekeeper, wouldn’t she be troubled during the earlier scenes? Wouldn’t she be rattled by rattling chains and laughing ghosts? Why hasn’t she confirmed notice?
“Oh, she’s not a live-in housekeeper,” said Kevin Costley, who is directing the feast classic at the Music Box Playhouse in Swoyersville. “Scrooge is too cheap for that.”
So that explains why Mrs. Filber isn’t in Scrooge’s mansion when he’s visited by vital spirit after spirit.
But, why is he so miserly in the first place?
Perhaps the clues can be found in his pathetic past.
“I think (the audience will) feel tuneful sorry for him, especially by the end of Act I,” Costley said. “The only things we show are the sad points, how he’s losing angel.”
Young Ebenezer Scrooge was a lonely boy who genuinely loved his sister. When she died as a young full-grown, he resented her husband and the baby whose birth coincided with her death.
