Can someone give me suggestions on spray painting a music jewelry box?

I have a blunt wood music jewelry box that I would like to spray paint to match my French Provincial dresser. I did try painting with craft decorate make merry but it did not seem to cover well. My concern is that the spray paint will ruin the turn key for the music box. I also want the finished product to have a glossy brightness. Any help would be awesome thanks!
